Xylitol Warning from Your Jaffrey Area Dog Walker

GumThe FDA released a warning about xylitol and the danger it can pose if ingested by dogs.  Xylitol is a sweetener found in many types of chewing gums, breath mints, ice cream and many other snacks and foods. It is also commonly added to toothpastes, so be sure to never use human toothpaste to brush your dog’s teeth, and read the ingredients list on dog toothpaste to make sure they are safe. Although xylitol is a “natural” sweetener, does not affect the glucose levels of humans and is a good sweetener alternative for humans with diabetes, it can  cause a dangerous spike in insulin levels of dogs, as well as seizures and liver failure.
